Michael Franks - Seeka:

“It has been a big year in New Zealand with a rain-impacted harvest through the second half of the harvest season"

Seeka Limited is expecting a record 2025 year having forecast earnings to the New Zealand Stock Exchange for the current year. Seeka has forecast record profit before tax between NZD$33.0m and NZD$37m for the 2025 year, up from the record $30m in 2024. Importantly, the New Zealand kiwifruit harvest of 47.0 million trays is up on 43.0 million last year and 29.8 million.

"It has been a big year in New Zealand with a rain-impacted harvest through the second half of the harvest season. All parts of our business have performed well, including Australia, where kiwifruit volumes of 2.25m kgs are about the same as last year," said Michael Franks, Seeka Chief Executive. "Our new development in Australia is going well, and we expect to see a steady increase in Kiwifruit volumes. Our sales are predominantly in the domestic market, but we do export when required, with excellent export demand."

Avocados
New Zealand has started the avocado harvest, and Seeka is exporting the early-season fruit. "We are looking at good volumes this season," said Franks. "We have a marketing alliance with FreshMax, which sells fruit alongside Seeka's own marketing programs to optimise returns for our growers."

Volumes look good, which is surprising with the very challenging weather patterns in New Zealand.

Seeka exports avocados to Australia, Asia, and Canada. "New Zealand has pivoted export programs away from Australia, with large locally grown volumes affecting market pricing. Although we don't export to the US, the tariffs are affecting where other countries are sending their produce."

Ruby Roo
Ruby Roo, a red nashi pear bred by Prevar, was launched recently at Hort Connections in Brisbane. Seeka has been trialling it in Australia with the first commercial volumes in 2025. As the volumes increase, they will access the export markets for the red nashi pear. This white fleshed, juicy pear has been well received by the market, having been launched at a gala event at Hort Connections in Brisbane with over 300 attendees. This is the first commercial variety event hosted by Seeka. RubyRoo will be shown and marketed at Asia Fruit Logistica.
