Abdelkader Benchagra, Maroc Avocado:

"Moroccan avocado production has grown impressively over the past 15 years"

Moroccan avocado cultivation has experienced impressive growth over the past 15 years, according to Abdelkader Benchagra of Maroc Avocado, which has branches in Morocco and the Netherlands. "In 2011/2012, we still had to buy Moroccan avocados via Spain or France. Local production was still in its infancy at the time: Both volume and quality were yet to develop. Yet we witnessed a remarkable shift year after year. What began as a question of whether Morocco could produce avocados at all has now evolved into recognition that Moroccan avocados rank among the best in the world."

"Production has grown from just a few tons in the early 2010s to more than 100,000 tons last season. Quality has also improved significantly and now meets the strictest European standards. Additionally, many growers now hold the certifications required by retailers. This progress is thanks to a new generation of avocado specialists and also to growers and producers with vision and perseverance," says Abdelkader.

"Despite the many challenges and obstacles the sector faces, Moroccan avocado cultivation continues to grow steadily. Last season, for the first time, the authorities officially set the start date of the season. This led to better fruit quality and taught impatient producers an important lesson: respecting the fundamentals yields better long-term results than chasing quick profits," Abdelkader explains. "We are now fully preparing for the new season and are further expanding our operations across Europe."
