Egyptian pomegranates coming soon

Egyptian pomegranates arrive on the market in late July/early August, with an expected increase in volumes, according to Amr Kadah, export manager at Fruit.Farm.

The exporter says, "We will start the season's harvest with the Early 116 variety, followed later by Manfaluti, Baladi in South Egypt, and finally the Wonderful variety. I can already announce a very dynamic season, thanks to a global preference for Egyptian pomegranates confirmed in recent seasons, giving a boost to this fruit in Egypt and placing it among the most important crops for growers and exporters in our country. Kadah further explains: "Egyptian pomegranates are a major export crop, occupying a prominent place in global markets due to their high quality and unique taste. With the growing global demand for healthy fruits, Egyptian pomegranates have become a key component of Egypt's agricultural export basket, particularly to the Gulf States, Europe, and East Asia. Last season, Egyptian pomegranate exports ranked eighth among fresh produce exports, with a total volume of 125,000 tons, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Due to the expansion of agriculture and the increasing global demand for healthy fruits, we anticipate a further increase in this volume this season.

Egyptian pomegranates are selling well in Gulf countries, which Kadah attributes to consumer preference for a sweet taste in countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait. "In Europe, Russia, and Southeast Asia, our pomegranates stand out for their very competitive prices and superior quality. We are also finding opportunities in other markets, such as East Africa," the exporter adds.

However, the season is expected to bring some challenges. Kadah says, "There are some logistical complications, such as insufficient refrigerated transportation in some of the countries we are targeting, as well as strong competition in the European market from Türkiye and India."
