According to the first estimates of the field study carried out by the National Union of French Potato Producers (UNPT) on behalf of CNIPT, "The French surface area intended for the production of ware potatoes - processing and fresh (excluding early) - will amount to more than 197,000 ha, showing growth of 10.3% in 2025, or almost 18,500 ha more than in 2024. This very high figure illustrates the massive influx of new farmers into production, especially for the processing segment."

"According to the first estimate drawn from the UNPT panel of growers interviewed between May and the end of June 2025, in the main production regions (Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Picardie, Centre-Val de Loire, Haute Normandie and Champagne-Ardenne), and supplemented by statistical data for the other basins, ware potato plantings (fresh & processing) would amount to more than 197,000 ha in 2025 compared with 178,000 ha in 2024 (CAP data), which is an increase of 10.3% in surface area (18,421 ha).
The UNPT/CNIPT study stresses that the increase in area has been much more limited among long-standing producers, and that the vast majority of this increase is due to new producers.
In detail, the biggest increases in area were in the Hauts-de-France region (+11,020 ha), more particularly in Picardie (+6,860 ha). The Hauts-de-France region remains the leading producer of ware potatoes, with more than 60% of French acreage.
As in previous years, summer weather conditions will have a major impact on the final production. The results of sampling carried out in the coming weeks by UNPT, in partnership with CNIPT, will enable us to measure and assess the situation as best we can this summer."
*The 2024 areas of the regions concerned have been adjusted based on CAP data published on January 1st, 2025.
