Over the past 10 years, the share of vegetable crops in the total sown area of the Lviv region has grown from 3.9% to 5.8%, a 50% increase. The data were published by Ihor Dydiv, associate professor at the Lviv National University of Natural Resources.
At the same time, the share of potato cultivation within vegetable crops declined slightly: from 14.8% to 13.3%, now covering 98,700 hectares. Of this area, 96% is still cultivated by household farms, with only 4% used for industrial production.
Open-field vegetable production in the region is dominated by cabbage, which accounts for 44.8% of total output. Cucumbers and gherkins follow with 11.1%, carrots 10.4%, table beets 9.5%, onions 8%, and zucchini 4.4%. Other vegetables make up 11.8%.
Dydiv notes that vegetable production is steadily expanding in both open fields and protected environments, such as greenhouses. The trend is driven by growing consumer demand, better local market access, and the adaptability of small farms.
