The sharp increase in sweet cherry prices in Georgia is linked to low yields caused by cold weather in April and May. This was reported by Vano Goglidzé, founder of the Kula cannery.
"Cherries now cost up to 25 GEL (€7.7) per kilo on the market. This price is because spring frosts hit sweet cherries hardest; they are more sensitive to frost and hail than other fruits. As a result, yields are low, and that affects the price," said Goglidzé.
He added that Kula does not plan to raise prices for its products yet, as the company still has sufficient raw material stocks from last season.
Prices have also increased for other summer fruits, peaches, apricots, sour cherries, and strawberries. However, according to official data, the overall price increase in the "fruits and grapes" category in June was limited to 2.7%.
