Tripura plans global push for Queen pineapple exports

In Tripura's hilly regions, the Queen pineapple is emerging as an export contender. With a project worth approximately US$15.8 million (Rs 132 crore) under consideration by the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Tripura aims to promote its pineapple internationally.

The Queen pineapple, although not new to Tripura, is cultivated organically on hill slopes, alongside bamboo and clay landscapes. The ambition is to establish it as a global brand in India's horticultural exports. With 11,862 hectares currently under cultivation, the state yields nearly 1.74 lakh metric tons annually. This includes both Queen and Kew varieties, though the Queen has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its taste and aroma.

Pending approval, the project will expand Queen pineapple cultivation by 2,000 hectares, enhancing farmer income and boosting local economies. The increased production will enable more extensive global distribution.

Tripura's export activities have already extended to Dubai, Qatar, and Bangladesh, with growing interest. Besides pineapples, the state exports goods such as jackfruit, tamarind, betel leaves, and ginger to Germany and the UK.

In 2018, former President Ram Nath Kovind declared the Queen pineapple as the state fruit of Tripura. Initially symbolic, the designation is becoming strategic with government support for development.
