The new harvest season for the Acquaviva red onion has officially begun, with the first bulbs arriving on the market about a week ago.
Giammarco Lionetti of Agriconetto, an Italian company based in Acquaviva, Apulia, that cultivates 12.5 hectares of the crop, provided an initial overview of the 2025 campaign's start.

"The new campaign is proceeding according to expectations, confirming the high quality and recognition of our product. The initial market feedback is positive. It signals a successful debut for an item renowned for its aesthetic, organoleptic, and nutraceutical properties. These characteristics include sweetness, size, flat shape, and a high flavonoid and vitamin B and C content."
Interest from Italian and foreign operators highlights the appreciation for the unique characteristics of this variety. "We have already received orders from Northern European countries. This debut is particularly encouraging, and the requests we have already received from international companies that supply large-scale retailers confirm the value and recognition of our onion beyond national borders. We expect a successful campaign," emphasizes Giammarco Lionetti.

He concludes, "We are speeding up the harvesting operations, thanks to the new machinery, so that we will be able to finish by mid-July. After that, we will store the goods in cells and gradually sell them. However, we believe that the current year will also end early. We expect to see a significant decrease in the amount of stored goods. This is similar to what happened in the previous two to three seasons."
