Italy's antitrust authority has fined energy firm Eni and its bioplastics subsidiary Novamont more than €32 million ($37 million) for abusing a dominant market position in the production of plastic bags used for fruit and vegetables.
According to the regulator, Novamont engaged in exclusionary practices in the domestic markets for raw materials used to produce light and ultra-light biodegradable bags for fresh produce. The market abuse reportedly occurred between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023.
Eni was fined €1.7 million, while Novamont received a penalty of €30.4 million. In response, Novamont stated it "firmly disagrees" with the ruling and plans to challenge the decision in court. The company added that it had "clearly demonstrated" during the investigation that its commercial conduct was fair and focused on supporting innovation, quality, and market value.
