Moldova’s apple exports in May surpass expectations

Despite low export-quality stock levels, Moldova exported over 8,000 tonnes of apples in May 2025, exceeding earlier modest expectations. While this figure is nearly 5,000 tonnes less than April volumes, it is slightly higher than in May 2024, according to Moldova Fruct.

Key export destinations included:

  • Russia: 5,700 tonnes
  • Romania: 1,700 tonnes
  • Ukraine: nearly 1,000 tonnes

Industry observers had predicted a May export range of only 5,000–7,000 tonnes, citing depleted high-quality inventories. Over the past five years, Moldova's May apple exports have typically ranged between 8,000 and 13,000 tonnes, with the peak occurring in May 2020 at nearly 25,000 tonnes.

Historically, June exports of the previous year's apples fall to 3,000–5,000 tonnes. Given this trend, Moldova Fruct's forecast for total apple exports from the 2024 harvest, estimated at 105,000–110,000 tonnes, appears realistic.
