Moldova's fruit exports in the upcoming 2025 season could drop by half in value, potentially reaching only $150–160 million (€138–147 million), according to a forecast by Moldova Fruct Chairman Vitalie Gorinchoy, presented at the recent "Fruit Day" festival.
This pessimistic outlook follows a 2024 export volume of approximately $290 million and is based on preliminary damage assessments from late spring frosts and hailstorms. The Moldova Fruct Association surveyed 100 orchard owners across 20 districts, revealing significant crop losses:
- Apples: up to 52% loss
- Apricots: up to 97% loss
The estimated combined value of crop losses and additional weather-related expenses exceeds 700 million Moldovan lei (approx. €36.4 million).
While this early forecast highlights major risks for Moldova's fruit sector, growers say a more accurate projection will be possible by late June, once the fate of later stone fruit varieties and apples becomes clearer.
