New Jersey is starting to move heavily into its blueberry season. "It's gotten underway pretty quickly here. We are looking at a really ample supply to go all the way past the 4th of July," says Joshua Minton of Frank Donio Inc., adding that it has more organic acreage this season–something that continues to grow for the company.
The timing of the crop this year is similar to historical timing. The crop typically begins this week and goes until the end of July.
As for growing conditions this season, rains were more plentiful in May this year. "It does help the growth of the fruit because it enlarges the fruit itself. What we need now is a bit of sun and for it to stay warm and dry so we can get out there and hand-pick the fruit," says Minton.

Blueberry crop size
All of this is producing a crop similar in size to years past, though Minton notes that some growers are reporting an increase in volume.
Meanwhile, demand for blueberries continues to grow. "Fifteen years ago, it was more of a regionalized item but now it's national 365 days a year," says Minton. "The consumption rate in the Americas continues to grow and that increases the demand for the product, especially domestic demand. We have some good local partners that really showcase the "Jersey Fresh" brand."
On pricing, it's expected to be stronger than in years past. "That correlates to the demand for the product itself. Consumers are purchasing more blueberries which creates more demand which creates a firmer price for the supply," says Minton.
