From July 2024 through March 2025, U.S. potato exports displayed varied performance across categories. According to U.S. Department of Commerce data, exports of frozen potatoes rose by 3%, fresh potatoes by 1%, and seed potatoes by 16%. In contrast, dehydrated potato exports fell by 16%, and potato chips decreased by 17%. Overall, the total export volume saw a 4% decline, reaching 2.3 million metric tons (fresh weight equivalent). This decline was primarily driven by the drop in dehydrated potato exports.
The export value for U.S. potatoes fell by 1% to $1.7 billion, in comparison to the same period the previous year. Frozen potatoes, the leading category, observed increased exports to Japan (9%), South Korea (11%), Canada (10%), Taiwan (13%), Guatemala (15%), and Saudi Arabia (4%). However, exports to the Philippines and Malaysia experienced declines of 26% and 9%, respectively, affected by competitive exports from China and India.
Fresh potato exports saw notable increases to Japan (76%), Taiwan (23%), the Dominican Republic (71%), and Guatemala (98%). Conversely, exports decreased to Canada by 19%, South Korea by 20%, the Philippines by 13%, and Malaysia by 37%, with the Asian market affected by competition from China and India. Mexico remained a consistent market, accounting for 43% of U.S. fresh potato exports.
Dehydrated potatoes registered declines in eight of the top ten markets, including Canada, Mexico, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Markets in Indonesia (127%) and Malaysia (26%) showed growth.
