Frankort & Koning ends overseas melon season three weeks later than last year

"Delays create overlap between overseas and European melon seasons"

This week, Frankort & Koning will receive the last overseas melons. "Due to delays, we are running no less than three weeks behind last year," says Gino van Lin. "These shipping delays have cast a shadow over the overseas season. In the first half, the melon quality was still quite good, but the second half was logistically very challenging, which also impacted shelf life."

"Fortunately, it looks like we'll have better logistical options available next season," Gino added. The importer will receive the final Galia, Cantaloupe, and yellow honey melons from Honduras this week. "There are still some old stocks on the market, but we expect those to clear out next week. The late arrivals are now overlapping with the Spanish and Italian seasons, so the whole market is feeling the effects."

Cantaloupe and Galia melons are currently priced at around 80 to 90 cents per kilo, while honey melons are selling for 90 cents. "We're seeing regular market demand, but at the moment it's supply rather than demand that's driving prices. We've also started with the first watermelons from Murcia, which are selling at around 80 cents."
