First Karmen field scales at work in Sicily

The Italian table grape harvest has begun with the first Sicilian bunches. The start of a new harvesting season in one of the most specialised areas in the country is activating an entire production and logistics sector, such as that of the equipment required for cutting and processing grapes.

"The last 10 scales arrived a few hours ago and are already at work in Canicattì (Agrigento). Many orders have been accepted, and quotes are in the process of being carried out in the other provinces of Sicily, Basilicata, and Puglia. This is the eighth year since the market launch of the Karmen scale, an innovative piece of equipment, the lightest and handiest on the market (weighing just 2.8 kg), practical for packing table grapes (and other fruit and vegetable items) directly at the harvesting points, and which can be attached to all types of stand. A scale that the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy has categorised as a utility model," reports Giuseppe Rescina (pictured below), technical manager and designer of Rescina Service, a company from Puglia that assembles this scale and sells it in the main production areas in Italy and abroad, confident in the product and the improvements made so far.

Thanks to its depth-adjustable tilt, the Karmen scale, which is known for its ability to improve employee working conditions, can weigh boxes of up to 25 kg directly in the vineyards, thereby avoiding double handling and reducing packaging costs. "With a slight modification, we were able to increase the tilt from 120 to 125 degrees, making it even easier to pack larger crates measuring 40x60 cm. The movable helicoidal wire inside the box makes the display and control buttons movable."

In order to strengthen the brand and provide a greater maintenance service, authorised technical assistance centres will soon be set up at various points of interest in Southern Italy, within easy reach of farms that have purchased such equipment. "The first one will be located in the province of Agrigento, but two more will be added in addition to the main one located in our headquarters in Noicattaro (Bari): one in the north of the province of Bari and the other in the province of Matera, so as to cover the main areas highly specialised in growing table grapes."
