The Garden Route in South Africa has seen avocado cultivation expand from 135 hectares in 2017 to 1,400 hectares. Last season yielded 3,000 tons, with expectations to double to over 6,000 tons. This positions the Garden Route to extend South Africa's avocado production, ensuring a year-round supply for local and international markets.
The traditional avocado season in South Africa is March to September. The Garden Route's climate allows harvesting from September to mid-February, bridging the supply gap. An industry representative stated, "We now have a consistent, high-quality avocado supply for the domestic market and a steady presence on international shelves." The popular Hass variety aids in this, known for its shelf life and transport durability.
Growth is driven by young farmers, including a George-based farmer and Agri Western Cape Young Farmer of the Year finalist, who shifted from blueberries to avocados. The farmer commented, "George is still young and growing—there's a lot of opportunity. There will be challenges, but the market looks strong, and this will be a good area for avocados for a while."
Current exports primarily go to Europe, with a recent first 21-ton shipment to Shanghai, China, showing potential Asian market expansion. With production rise, favorable climate, and global demand increase, the Garden Route is set to play a role in South Africa's avocado industry.
