The citrus season is in full swing, but as it progresses, the quality often declines towards the end, posing a challenge for many growers, importers, and exporters. Fortunately, technology continues to advance. Recent innovations, such as the citrus washing line, offer an efficient and high-quality method for cleaning citrus fruits. Looije Packing says that this helps extend their shelf life and reduce waste.
Since last season, Looije Packing has implemented an advanced citrus washing line that helps reduce waste for their customers by up to 50%. Joeri Doomernik, New Business Manager at Looije Packing, explains, "We introduced our advanced citrus washing line last year. It immediately allowed us to help various customers clean their products, effectively extending the citrus season for them."
New techniques to ensure qualityThe cleaning process on Looije Packing's citrus washing line includes washing, brushing, drying, and detecting even the smallest defects on the fruits. "With HD cameras and infrared lamps, even tiny mold spots are identified," says Doomernik. "The machine uses a combination of air and water misting, ensuring only the best fruit is packaged. This significantly reduces product waste, with up to half of the initially rejected fruit still meeting the quality standards expected by the end customer."
Capacity and flexibility
Thanks to the versatility of the washing line, Looije Packing can process a wide range of products, including oranges, mandarins, lemons, grapefruits, and limes. Additionally, it is possible to process both large and small orders over the line, as scaling up and down is easy. Doomernik concludes: "This makes us very flexible and able to handle almost any request."
