Vergers Cancel began the cherry season last week with the Burlat variety. This is the first variety that consumers will be able to enjoy this week. "Cherries officially kick off the summer fruit season, and we are in a normal year in terms of calendar. We usually start marketing the first cherries just before the 15th of May, which was the case this year. We thought we would have some delay, but in the end, we caught up over the last few weeks," explains Alexandre Cancel.

Although the orchards did not suffer any damage from frost, the company estimates that the harvest will be around 70% of its full potential. "We were more optimistic a few weeks ago, but we had some drop from the trees, which reduced the harvest potential, now estimated at 560 tons. Although the expected volumes are lower, the quality is excellent. "The cherries are really superb. Last week's storms had no effect on the quality of the fruit. Again this year, the first cherries are eagerly awaited and have been very well received."

At the start of the season, prices are relatively high. "Prices are always very high as soon as the cherry season gets underway. But the prices will drop each day until they finally stabilize." After the Burlat, the season will continue with other varieties, until approximately the 10th of July. Then comes the plum season, which also looks very promising this year.
