Ataúlfo, the mango with designation of origin, aims for Europe

To strengthen the presence of Mexican agri-food products in Europe, the Mexican Mission to the European Union and the Mexico-European Union Chamber of Commerce (MexChamEU) organized an event to promote the Ataúlfo mango in Brussels on April 29, 2025, at the Official Residence of Mexico in Belgium.

The meeting brought together representatives of the commercial sector, supermarket chains, distributors, producers, European authorities, diplomats, and specialized media. The goal was to present the qualities of the Ataúlfo mango, a variety grown mainly in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, as a product with potential for insertion and expansion in the European market.

During his speech, Mexico's ambassador to the European Union, Rogelio Granguillhome Morfin, stressed the importance of strengthening agri-food trade relations between Mexico and Europe. "The Ataulfo mango, recognized for its distinctive flavor and quality, represents an opportunity to consolidate products with identity and added value in the region," he stated.

The Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy, Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez, participated in the event via a pre-recorded message in which he stressed the need to diversify Mexican exports and highlighted the Ataúlfo mango as one of the agricultural products with the greatest international projection.

The event was attended by Piet Schotel, a consultant with more than 50 years of experience in the fresh produce trade. Unlike other yellow mango varieties, the Ataúlfo combines organoleptic qualities with a remarkable shelf life, both in transport and on the shelf, which makes it suitable for the demands of the European market, he said.

Nicolas Coste, sourcing manager for Dole Europe, and representatives of Farm Fresh Exotics, shared their experience with the promotion of the product in supermarkets and wholesale markets of the continent. "The Ataulfo mango is increasingly appreciated by consumers, but its expansion will require coordinated efforts in logistics, branding, and supply continuity," they stated.

Mexican producer Yurie Cruz presented a video welcoming the growing European interest in the Ataúlfo mangoes and highlighted the Mexican farmers' commitment to quality.

One of the highlights was the protected designation of origin for the Ataúlfo mango from Soconusco, Chiapas. The European Union will recognize this legal figure once the modernization of the Mexico-EU Global Agreement enters into force, increasing its visibility and competitiveness in a market of more than 450 million consumers.

"The success of Ataúlfo mango in Europe will depend on its intrinsic qualities and the Mexican sector's capacity to comply with international standards of quality, sustainability, and social responsibility," stated the vice president of MexChamEU, Rodolfo Meza.

The event concluded with a tasting of dishes made with Ataúlfo mango and a networking session. The attendees said the event was a concrete demonstration of Mexico's commitment to promoting its agri-food products with a long-term strategic vision.
