Pietro Buongiorno of Consorzio Produttori di Limoni Associati:

"Our lemons travel by air and by road"

Supermarkets and foreign distribution platforms continue to demand constant and abundant supplies of Italian lemons, even now that the campaign is nearing its end.

The market is looking decidedly lively, also due to the quality problems of the product imported from other countries, which is not holding up well due to the widespread rain and humidity in foreign production areas.

"This is a campaign to remember for us: we are full of European and non-EU orders. The commercial situation is interesting and flourishing in every market. For example, we are registering a 60% growth in shipped volumes to Japan compared to a year ago, with two scheduled departures per week and a total of 40 pallets per week. The lemons arrive by truck at the airports of Milan Linate or Rome Fiumicino, and then leave for Tokyo and Yokohama, where distribution to dozens of points of sale begins. We also ship 25 pallets per week to the Arab Emirates. At this time of the season, logistics is always by air to shorten the shipping time compared to the 25 days required by cargo ships. We do not use chemicals to extend the shelf life of the fruit. Lemons are processed as they are removed from the trees, and then shipped to customers," explains Pietro Buongiorno, the president of Consorzio di Produttori di Limoni Associati, which owns the Limoré brand.

The European continent is also a surprise with record sales figures. "An average of 17 pallets per week leave for Norway, Great Britain, and Germany. Orders from Switzerland amount to around six pallets per week. The goods destined for European destinations travel by road. Three packaging formats are available: 30x40 cm single-layer crates, 40x60 cm crates, and the new Limonello pack holding 9 to 12 fruits and with a total weight of 1.5 kg. We will finish the harvesting and sales season at the end of May, ahead of schedule."
