Ukraine can't grow enough quality pears for itself and for export

Ukraine has enough pear orchards, but only a few farms are able to produce fruit of sufficient quality, as pears are considered a challenging crop to grow.

Vladyslav Makarenko, co-owner of the farm "Makosad," shared these insights in an interview with the magazine Horticulture in Ukrainian Style.

According to him, most growers don't even consider exporting pears due to the lack of supply on the domestic market. In recent years, Ukraine has been importing pears to meet internal demand.

"Many tried growing pears but gave up because of the complex farming techniques involved," Makarenko said. "In the Chernivtsi region, for decades, nearly every fruit farmer had at least part of their land planted with pears. Today, almost no one does. Severe frosts also played a role; in some years, the trees froze completely."
