According to the National Association of Blueberry Producers (ANPM), blueberry plantations in Portugal are expected to cover approximately 3,000 hectares in 2024, a stark increase from the 43 hectares recorded in 2010. "It is estimated that in 2024 blueberry cultivation will occupy around 3 thousand hectares in Portugal. It has grown year after year, because in 2010, the year in which blueberry cultivation began to become more professional, we had only 43 hectares," noted Gonçalo Bernardo of ANPM.
Data on production for 2024 is anticipated soon, with the number of growers nearing 1,500. In 2023, production reached nearly 21,000 tons across 2,627 hectares. The 2022 export value stood at 38 million euros. ANPM, a non-profit entity, aims to organize the production chain and advocate for growers' interests. The association also seeks to promote Portuguese blueberries domestically and internationally, fostering fruit consumption and healthy eating habits.
