The 2025 asparagus season has officially begun. Due to low night temperatures, this year's harvest was delayed. The soil temperature took longer than usual to reach the optimal level, causing the first asparagus to become available later. Meanwhile, the first asparagus from the cold greenhouse (double tunnels) of grower Robert den Brok from Schaik has been harvested and offered for auction via ZON's digital platform.
As per tradition, the first box was auctioned today. As in previous years, the proceeds will go to charity. This year, the chosen beneficiary is the Toon Hermans Huis Noord-Limburg, an organization that provides professional support to people with cancer, their loved ones, and their relatives.
Impex Heemskerk saw this as a worthy cause and set the final bid at 100 euros per kilo. ZON doubled the proceeds, resulting in a total donation of 1,000 euros to the Toon Hermans Huis.
"Looking ahead to the season, it remains uncertain what to expect. In particular, the new 2024 plantings have suffered from excessive rainfall, though the exact impact is still unclear. However, there are also positive indications: despite the challenges, sufficient volumes are expected to meet market demand," the cooperative stated.
"As in previous years, the challenge lies in optimally balancing supply and demand. The first signs of increasing demand are already visible, partly due to the rising number of sunny days. Restaurants are preparing to feature this beloved seasonal vegetable, known as the 'queen of vegetables,' back on their menus. With the first harvest completed, the 2025 asparagus season is now officially underway."
