Eden Gold pear blossoming around the world

The new Eden Gold™ pear variety is blossoming in the orchards of key growing countries around the world. This is while the fruit is increasingly being enjoyed by consumers in the key consumption markets of Europe. Ido Ben Dor, from Ben Dor Fruits and Nurseries in Israel, says, "Eden Gold pears reached new territories of planting and testing. Good marketing results were reached in the EU. While no specific pricing information can be given, it is very high and above market."

Ben Dor developed the pear variety TP15-41 marketed as Eden Gold. They are slowly but meticulously building out the variety across the world. This is done through test blocks as well as careful and close work with growers, exporters as well as retailers. The demand for young plants of this variety already exceeds what the nurseries can supply, something which they are working hard on to multiply the young trees to keep up with the growing demand.

Italy is one of the leading countries where plantings of Eden Gold are gaining strong momentum. "Production of Eden Gold pears in Italy saw last year's marketed production at hundreds of tons. This was distributed in various countries such as Italy, Germany and Austria. In addition, we conducted tests mainly in the Nordic countries, especially in Scandinavia, and also in Croatia and Slovenia. For the 2025 season, 1000 tons are planned to be sold. In terms of hectares planted in Italy, up to now 120 hectares have been planted and the goal is to reach 500 hectares by 2030," explains Ben Dor.

Planting and testing of commercial markets continue in Canada, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and China. "An open day was held in South Africa, while in India the Eden Gold trees are starting to flower," states Ben Dor.

"TopFruit was the host of the open day in South Africa and reported that it was a massive success. It was well attended by growers, packers exporters, and retailers who had the opportunity to experience this variety at its peak ripeness. Attendees noted excellent Article fruit size, beautiful visual finish with no markings, high production potential, and exceptional eating quality. To top it off, some of the fruit harvested during the event will soon be on its way to European and Asian markets for potential clients to experience Eden Gold first-hand. The fruit received excellent feedback from the retailers that attended the field day. Furthermore, Eden Gold is dominating in early tasting results – setting the standards far above other pear varieties. So far, the variety looks well adapted to the various micro-climates in South Africa. In 2024 the first semi-commercial block of 1000 trees was established, and plantings are set to reach 6000 trees by 2026," concludes Ben Dor.
