There's been good demand for onions from Egypt this year, says Rayan El Sawy, Chairman of fresh produce exporter Egyptian-Emirati Import & Export: "The Egyptian onion season has been dynamic, with strong demand for red and golden onions. Challenges include logistics and price fluctuations, but quality remains a priority. Despite weather impacts on yield, the season has been stable, with a focus on adapting to market trends and maintaining buyer relationships."
According to El Sawy, the production of the onions in Egypt has been on a stable level this year, sufficient to meet this stronger demand. "This season, the production volumes for onions were relatively stable, but weather conditions did cause some fluctuations. While production remained strong, some areas in the Delta and Upper Egypt experienced slight yield variations. Overall, supply was sufficient to meet export demand, although careful planning was necessary to manage market shifts."

The lower production in other exporting countries has been one of the causes of the demand for onions from Egypt, El Sawy explains: "Current demand for Egyptian onions is strong, especially for red and golden varieties, driven by international market needs and competitive pricing. Global supply challenges and weather-related production issues in other exporting countries have also contributed to increased demand. Additionally, stable quality and Egypt's strategic position as a major exporter have reinforced interest from key markets."
For Egyptian-Emirati, the demand from European buyers has seen an increase this season, El Sawy states. "Our main onion export markets include Europe, the Gulf region, and parts of Asia, with strong demand from markets such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Europe. This season, we have seen increased interest from European buyers, due to supply shortages in other regions. Compared to previous seasons, demand has been more diversified, with some non-traditional markets showing stronger interest due to competitive prices and logistical advantages."

"For the remainder of the season, we expect stable demand, especially from key export markets. Prices may fluctuate depending on global supply dynamics, but Egypt's competitive position should keep exports strong. Our focus will remain on maintaining quality, optimizing logistics, and adapting to shifting market conditions to maximize opportunities," El Sawy concludes.
