In calendar week 8, the first Hayward kiwis grown in Turkey arrived in Germany. "Due to the extreme weather fluctuations during the growing season in the Yalova growing region, south of Istanbul, there has been a significant decline in volume this year. In some plantations, not even a third of the yield was harvested this year. This also has a corresponding effect on prices, which have doubled in some cases compared to last year," reports Ersan Yildizak, fruit importer and managing director of disFruta GmbH.

Hayward kiwis of Turkish origin are characterized by their high Brix value and predominantly large caliber.
The Duisburg-based company has been importing Turkish kiwis for four years. "These are refrigerated goods, although in the past we have also offered fresh kiwis. However, the majority of fresh kiwis of Turkish origin are exported to the Middle East, which is mainly because they are in direct competition with Italy and Greece in the European markets. Currently, the Italian and Greek seasons are coming to an end, while New Zealand is not yet fully represented on the market. Accordingly, this offers us opportunities," says Yildizak, who mainly supplies customers at German wholesale markets. disFruta GmbH has a total of around 15 to 18 tons available this year, which are expected to be marketed until mid or late March.

Concentrated kiwi cultivation
According to Yildizak, the kiwi fruit is an integral part of the Turkish fruit industry, trending upwards. "A few things stand out: Firstly, kiwi cultivation is concentrated in the Yalova region, while the crop is less common in other growing areas in the country. Furthermore, the Hayward variety is still very dominant, although the Kiwi Gold has gradually been gaining in importance in recent years. I therefore do not rule out the possibility that we will also offer Kiwi Gold of Turkish origin in the future," he concludes.
