After a 13-year hiatus, Jordan has recommenced its vegetable exports to Syria, with Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat overseeing the operations. The move, marked by a ceremony attended by Acting Charge d'Affaires of the Syrian embassy in Amman, Ihsan Roman, and Balqa Governor Salman Najada, aims to rejuvenate the agricultural sector affected by regional unrest, particularly benefiting the winter farming season in the Jordan Valley.
Hneifat pointed out the strategic role of Syria as a conduit for Jordanian goods en route to European markets through Turkey, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra. He also pledged Jordan's support for Syria's agricultural sector by sharing expertise and modern technologies.
Roman acknowledged Jordan's sustained support, highlighting the potential for enhanced trade and agricultural cooperation between the two nations. Adnan Khaddam, President of the Jordan Valley Farmers Union, and Suleiman Hayari, President of the Union of Exporters and Importers of Vegetables and Fruits, both emphasized the critical nature of the Syrian market for Jordanian exports. Before the suspension, Syria was a major recipient of Jordanian agricultural exports, with significant volumes of goods flowing annually, thereby playing a crucial role in the competitiveness of Jordanian exporters and spurring agricultural activity in the Jordan Valley upon the market's reopening.
