A zookeeper at Osaka Tennoji Zoo is accused of repeatedly stealing fruits and vegetables intended for animals. The man, in his 40s and employed for over a decade, admitted to taking the food, which was meant to sustain the zoo's 1,000 animals. Rising grocery prices and inflation have increased the zoo's daily food costs by ¥20,000 since 2021, adding to financial strain. Established in 1915, the zoo serves fresh, human-edible food to ensure animals accept their meals due to their keen sense of smell.
