Durian production in Laos has reached a stage where the industry is exploring export opportunities to China, the largest global market for the fruit. In southern Laos, on the Bolaven Plateau, known for its coffee, a Chinese entrepreneur, Tao Jian, has established a durian farm with 50,000 trees, celebrating its first harvest. Tao highlighted the region's fertile soil and the development of a high-quality hybrid durian variety, predicting Laos could become a leading durian producer. The country has seen a shift from small-scale to more professional durian farming practices, with the Lao Agricultural Business Association indicating a robust future for the industry in international markets. Currently, Laos produces approximately 900 tons of durians annually from 170 farms, with expectations of significant growth. Although Laos has yet to export durians to China, preparations for market access are underway. China, a major durian importer, has seen its demand shape the durian market in Southeast Asia, benefiting farmers in Thailand and Vietnam. The Laos-China railway, enhancing connectivity between the two countries, along with investments from Chinese businessmen in Lao durian farms, could further facilitate the export of durians to China, potentially boosting Laos' economy.
