Following the establishment of a protocol on phytosanitary requirements, Malaysia commenced the export of fresh durians to China on August 24. This development occurred two months after Malaysia and China inked the agreement aimed at facilitating the trade of this fruit. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup revealed that an initial shipment consisting of 40 tonnes of durians, featuring varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, and IOI, is set to be dispatched to China in three stages by eight exporting firms.
The inaugural phase saw 15 tonnes shipped on August 24, with a subsequent 10 tonnes scheduled for August 25, and the final batch to follow. This milestone was achieved after the Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Fresh Durian from Malaysia to China was formalized, a pact signed by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister of the General Administration of Customs China Yu Jianhua in Putrajaya on June 19.
