In Kano State, there has been a notable fluctuation in the market prices of key agricultural commodities, particularly onions and tomatoes, as reported by Daily Trust. At Yankaba Market, vendors have observed a sharp increase in the price of onions, with a bowl that was once sold for N6,000 now fetching N10,000. Conversely, tomato prices have seen a decline, with figures dropping from N3,200 and N3,500 to N2,500 and N2,000 in certain locations, according to a local resident named Saifullah.
Mallam Abubakar Usman, another vendor, highlighted that the price surge has affected not only loose onions but also packs, which are now priced at N70,000. Usman pointed out the distinct market behaviour between the two vegetables, emphasizing that their prices do not fluctuate in parallel. He attributed this to the differing seasonal demands, noting both onions and tomatoes face high demand during the rainy season, yet their price movements remain unlinked.
The report also sheds light on the impact of recent weather conditions on supply, with onions suffering from the adverse effects of rain, leading to scarcity and higher prices. In contrast, an abundance of tomatoes has resulted in lower prices and increased sales for vendors dealing in this commodity.
