Chile prepares its kiwis for the Indian market

India's fruit consumption, including kiwi, is growing thanks to the government's health policies. This context positions this 1.4 billion-people country as a key destination in Asia for the Chilean kiwi industry. In its upcoming official visit to India, the Government of Chile, represented by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, and representatives of exporting guilds, will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing issues relevant to the fresh fruit export sector.

"The most relevant thing about India is that it is a market with constant growth where the youth is one of the consumer segments with the greatest potential for increase, considering that they seek to eat right following the healthiest trends of their generation. In this trip, we'll show how important India is to Chile. We'll also reinforce the work we've carried out for years to promote the consumption of our fruits in this important market. We'll also announce that we can develop long-term work in India. It's a country with professional operators where we've done a great job with the retail chains. We need to show our effort and commitment to the organizations of the Government of India if we want to grow in this market," stated Carlos Cruzat, president of Frutas de Chile's Kiwi Committee.

India's Ministry of Health has asked the population to incorporate vitamin C into their diet, which benefits our promotional campaigns as kiwi stands out for their vitamin C content, Cruzat stated.

The challenges for Chilean kiwi in India include more than 16% tariffs, logistical challenges, and unfair competition, such as counterfeiting of origin by Iranian exporters, Cruzat stated. These challenges require attention and coordinated work with the Indian authorities. In addition, they face internal logistics obstacles and issues preserving fruit quality due to limitations in the cold chain.

Despite these challenges, significant progress has been made in the Indian market for Chilean kiwi, improving flow speed and product quality.
