India's Mundra Port, a leading hub for containerized trade, is experiencing delays in cargo movement due to congestion at its container terminals. The Container Freight Station Association highlighted the increasing backlog, affecting the normal flow between container freight stations and terminals. Efforts to alleviate the situation have not yielded positive results, with the congestion worsening over time.
The port authority's new process for issuing port entry permits has been identified as a primary concern, causing delays for truckers in moving containers in and out of the port. The association emphasized the need for a corrective measure to ensure smooth operations.
Container rail operators have also expressed their frustrations due to the inability to evacuate import containers efficiently, leading to restrictions on double-stack loading by Indian Railways to facilitate faster train evacuation. The Association of Container Train Operators clarified that the imposition of ground rent charges is not due to their fault.
Mundra Port, operated by Adani Ports, is considering further investments to expand its capacity amid growing container volumes, having handled 7.4 million TEUs in the fiscal year 2023-24, a 15% increase over Nhava Sheva Port. Adani Group aims to continue investing in the logistics segment to support growth.
