Punjab Government pushes for litchi export expansion

In a recent development, the Punjab Government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has announced its plans to export Pathankot district's litchi to international markets. This initiative aims at boosting the income of local farmers and producers while addressing the issue of groundwater dependency. The announcement was made by Horticulture Minister S. Chetan Singh Jouramajra during the State Level Litchi Exhibition at Litchi Zone Sujanpur.

Pathankot, contributing to 60% of Punjab's litchi production, is recognized for its high-quality litchis. Jouramajra emphasized the government's efforts to promote litchi production awareness among farmers and facilitate the entry of Pathankot litchis into foreign markets. He highlighted the environmental benefits of shifting cultivation from paddy and wheat to horticulture, such as reduced heat and improved underground water levels. The minister also announced a personal contribution of Rs.100,000 to support the export initiative.
