Colombia's banana sector is expanding its horizons towards Asia, a continent it identifies as a promising new "commercial window." Important banana export companies such as C.I Tecbaco, Banasan, and Uniban are following the example of coffee, whose exports to China increased by more than 130% in 2023, and actively exploring the potential of the Asian market. Juan Carlos Rojas, Uniban's commercial vice president, highlighted the importance of exploring new opportunities in Asia to determine their viability.
According to Juan Carlos Duarte, CEO of Tecbaco, Asia is a promising market but it's important to focus on current customers. Banasan, which exports 12 million boxes per month, expressed particular interest in South Korea, a market where it has already established contracts in previous years.
Colombia's containerized cargo, including bananas, achieved positive results in the first quarter. The country's containerized cargo export volume increased by 13.7% over the same period of the previous year, significantly driven by the growth in banana exports, which were 120% higher than in the first quarter of 2023.
