International blueberry seminar in Guadalajara, Mexico

'Blueberry production will need to double within five years to meet the demand'

The International Blueberry Seminar in Guadalajara on June 5 and 6 saw significant participation from industry leaders. These leaders addressed the challenges facing the blueberry and berry industry with transparency and analytical depth. The discussions, both in individual presentations and collective panels, led to several key conclusions: the impact of climate as a constant challenge, the role of genetics in addressing these challenges, the need for more professional and effective management, and the imperative for continuous training.

Furthermore, it was unanimously agreed that the industry has a sustainable future, underpinned by a demand that is outpacing supply globally. Projections suggest that blueberry production will need to double within five years to meet this demand, aiming for a target close to 3 million tons.

One notable presentation by Professor Prometeo Sánchez delved into the interplay between blueberry cultivation and environmental stress factors such as high temperatures, low humidity, and radiation. Titled "Management of climate stress to improve health, productivity and quality in blueberries," Sánchez offered insights into enhancing management practices to better withstand climate-related challenges. He concluded that the recent production issues in Peru and Mexico were primarily due to management shortcomings rather than the direct impacts of climate change itself.
