Labour MP Steve Reed has condemned water companies for sewage spills causing "poop tomatoes" to grow on British beaches. These plants are sprouting from seeds in human waste discharged into waterways. Reed called for criminal liability for water bosses overseeing illegal sewage dumps. Heavy rainfall has exacerbated the issue, with sewage spills in England doubling to over 3.6 million hours in 2023. The spills, damaging to tourism and public health, have led to an increase in unexpected beachside tomato plants.
