Despite being the world's 7th largest onion producer

Nigeria does not not really feature on the global onion export map

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council has disclosed that Nigeria, despite being the world's 7th largest onion producer, does not feature on the global onion export map. This was highlighted by the Sokoto State Coordinator, Umar Akoyi, during a stakeholders' interactive session aimed at developing an onion strategy document for export. Akoyi pointed out that the government had not initially recognised onion as an export product.

Furthermore, the National President of the National Onion Producers, Processor and Marketers of Nigeria, Aliyu, expressed his concern over Ghana's presence on the export map despite its reliance on Nigerian onions for meeting its demands. He noted, "Nigeria produces 2 million tonnes of onion, while Ghana produces less than 10,000 tones," emphasizing the vast difference in production levels between the two countries. The lack of government support for the sector was identified as a key factor for Nigeria's absence from the export map.
