Karnataka farmer earns good money from Miyazaki mangoes

In Udupi, Karnataka, a local farmer has embarked on cultivating Miyazaki mangoes, a rare Japanese variety, on his rooftop terrace in Shankarpur. These mangoes, known for their unique taste and medicinal properties, are sold at a premium price, approximately Rs 300,000 per kilogram, translating to Rs 10,000 per mango. Lobo initiated this venture in 2023, facing initial setbacks due to adverse weather conditions but achieving a significant yield and profit in the current year.

Besides Miyazaki mangoes, his 1,200-square-foot rooftop garden hosts a variety of rare fruits and plants, including white Java plums, Brazilian cherries, a unique Taiwanese orange breed, and Shankarpura jasmine, all of which he also sells.

The farmer's initiative highlights the potential for diverse and sustainable urban agriculture, with the Miyazaki mangoes standing out for their exceptional value driven by their taste and health benefits.
