Limes are currently sizzling on the market. "It was different; that market is recovering from a profound slump," explains Wim Bezemer of Four Seasons Fruit Supply (FSFS) in the Netherlands. "However, fewer limes were shipped, and trade was well absorbed in recent weeks. Often, this product is sold at good prices before it even arrives. The only issue is that delays are causing hold-ups."
"As it stands, the market should stay strong until at least the second week of May. Prices are around 12 to 14 euros, with some people even flying limes in. We don't do that. Often, the downside is that if air-freighted limes don't sell as quickly, prices plummet drop, which can sometimes unnecessarily affect the rest of the limes," says Wim.
FSFS receives weekly arrivals of Louise brand limes from northern Brazil and the Bahia region. "The quality is good. We sell most of these in 4-4.5 kg boxes to European exporters and wholesalers, with Germany and Scandinavia as our main markets."
Wim says there are few countries of origin on the market aside from Brazil. "Mexico is barely present in the European market. They get better prices in North America. I also hear little this year from countries like Vietnam, Colombia, and Peru," he concludes.
