Adex will organize Ginger Week from May 8 to 10

Peru, third largest ginger exporter in the world in 2022

In 2022, Peru became the world's third largest exporter of ginger and the eighth largest exporter of turmeric. Despite having climbed one position in both cases compared to 2021, there is still much work to be done to ensure responsible and sustainable supply chains, says the Global Business and Economics Research Center of the Exporters Association CIEN-ADEX.

"Boosting their potential will have a positive impact on the places where they are cultivated, especially on the central jungle, from where large volumes are shipped to the main markets around the world," said the director of CIEN-ADEX, Edgar Vásquez Vela, at the presentation of Ginger Week 2024.

The event, organized by ADEX and ProGinger, will take place from May 8 to 10 in the municipality of Satipo, in Junín, and aims to bring together all stakeholders in both supply chains, including producers, exporters, logistics service companies, financial advisors, shippers or laboratories, among others. There will be representatives from public and private entities.

The fourth edition of Ginger Week will feature specialized technical tables, seminars with national and international speakers, business matchmaking, networking opportunities, and visits to fields and processing plants, among other activities. The sponsors are Cartones Villa Marina, CLG Supply, Financiera Qapaq, Rey Export Internacional and Trupal, which is devoted to the manufacturing of packaging and wrapping materials.

Figures
For her part, the head of ADEX Consulting, Lizbeth Pumasunco, gave a presentation on the 'Prospects for ginger and turmeric exports', which confirmed that Peru became the world's third largest ginger exporter in 2022, reaching US$ 63.08 million and an 8.1% share of global trade, and being surpassed only by China (US$ 312.73 million) and the Netherlands (US$ 96.34 million).

"Ginger is a very versatile commodity. In the U.S., for example, it is used in the production of probiotic juices, beers, cookies or candies; as well as in dietary supplements, moisturizers, capsules, body lotions or eyebrow pencils, among others. Ground ginger and ginger paste are also marketed," added Pumasunco.

In China, it is consumed, for example, in jams, ground ginger or jalapeños with ginger. It is also used by the cosmetics industry to produce shampoos, cleansing patches, essential oils and organic serum. The pharmaceutical industry uses it as an ingredient for gummies and pills.

Peruvian turmeric, which moved from ninth place in 2021 to eighth in 2022 in the ranking of the world's leading exporters, generated US$ 4.229 million, achieving a 1.1% share globally. In the top five we have the U.S. (US$ 49.8 million), Iran (US$ 29.8 million), Bangladesh (US$ 28.7 million), India (US$ 27.4 million), and China (US$ 16.2 million).
