MIguel Gonzalez, MG Fruit:

"We're going to enchant the Dutch market with these Spanish kiwis"

In Spain, the kiwi sector is undergoing significant expansion in Asturias. Kiwis from that region are rapidly gaining ground in the current market for their taste and quality. ASP Fruit markets these fruits under the Asturgourmet and Kiwinatur brands. This family business has over 400 hectares of kiwi orchards, of which 100 hectares are organic.

"Asturias is still an unknown European region of origin, but quality-wise, it's superior to other kiwi-cultivation areas. The taste, shape, and color of kiwis from Asturias amaze consumers. They're flavorful, wonderfully textured, and have a soft white core," assures Commercial Director Pablo Lechado. "These kiwis easily achieve a brix level of 13 to 16. So, they're sweeter than other kiwi varieties and highly valued in Europe."

According to Pablo, the key to producing these high-quality kiwis is fully controlling the orchards' location and production. "Asturias' largest and longest river, the Nalón, surrounds our orchards," he says. "Those orchards' shape and favorable climate are ideal for growing kiwis."

New plantations are added to the area every year, making it possible to export this product to the rest of Europe. "We want to introduce European consumers to these delicious kiwis without losing sight of sustainability, which is why more than 100 hectares of our production are organic," Pablo concludes.

Soon, ASP Fruit will also start producing red and yellow organic kiwis, expanding its offering and attracting new consumers. MG Fruit, an ASP Fruit partner, will introduce these Asturias kiwis to the Dutch market. Both companies are family-owned with Spanish roots and aim to commercialize the highest-quality fruit.
