“Some new Sichuan citrus varieties have promising prospects”

The Sichuan citrus harvest has flourished this season thanks to favorable weather conditions throughout the growing period. Compared to last year, this year's yield has nearly doubled, with a notable expansion of orchard planting areas around Pujiang, Sichuan's core production hub, by approximately 20 to 30%.

Among the popular Sichuan citrus varieties, Ppagan and Aiyuan oranges have dominated the market in recent years. Additionally, attention is gradually shifting towards new local varieties. Mr. Li from Sichuan Yichen Fresh provided insights into this season's citrus trends.

"Papagan, a recent bestseller, has faced challenges this year due to increased production and reduced sweetness, resulting in a less favorable market performance compared to the previous year," Li explained. The abundance of fruits per tree has led to smaller sizes and decreased sweetness. Consequently, prices have dropped by nearly half compared to last year.

Despite this setback, market interest remains high, prompting continued cultivation, albeit at a slower pace. Li suggests that large-scale and specialized cultivation could enhance fruit quality and economic returns in the future. In contrast, Aiyuan oranges have experienced a surge in production due to expanded planting, resulting in a significant price decline and unsatisfactory sales.

Left: Ganping; Right: Mingrijian

Introducing two noteworthy new Sichuan citrus varieties, Li highlighted "Ganping" and "Mingrijian." "Ganping citrus is currently gaining momentum in the market, boasting large, visually appealing fruits weighing between 80-130 grams, abundant water content, and a sweet taste. Despite a short fruiting period from November to January or February, its price peaks at ¥10-12/kg during this time. Many farmers anticipate a promising future for Ganping, leading to increased cultivation."

"Meanwhile, Mingrijian offers a sweet and crisp texture surpassing that of Papagan oranges, albeit with a relatively tough peel. Although production is limited and prices remain high, the decline in Papagan prices has impacted Mingrijian sales and prices this year. Nevertheless, significant production increases are expected next year."

Of the two new varieties, Ganping is favored in wholesale markets, while e-commerce platforms prefer Mingrijian.
