UK farmers issue warning they could run out of potatoes

Recent reports from the UK have highlighted a concerning trend in potato production, attributing a potential shortage to a series of unfavorable weather events. The 2022 harvest yielded only 4.1 million tonnes of potatoes, a significant drop attributed to adverse conditions, including heavy rainfall and flooding caused by Storms Agnes, Babet, and Ciaran. These storms led to waterlogged fields, severely impacting the crop. Despite current supplies meeting demand, future availability remains uncertain.

AKP Group, a major UK potato supplier, reported a reduction in yield due to the challenging harvest conditions, compounded by increased energy and fertilizer costs. This has led to a notable price increase for certain potato varieties in supermarkets, with a warning that British potatoes may be scarce by summer, potentially being replaced by imports. The vulnerability of potatoes to diseases and environmental stressors further complicates the situation. Industry experts express concern over the sustainability of supplies, especially for specific varieties.
