Armenian potato export to Russia becomes unprofitable, farmers stage protests

Farmers from Gegharkunik province of Armenia expressed their dissatisfaction as the potato crop they cultivated with credit funds remains unsold, with tons of produce lying in warehouses and storage facilities.

According to the Ministry of Economy, potato exports to the Russian market have become unprofitable due to low selling prices. As a result, the ministry suggested exploring export opportunities in other markets.

The massive import of relatively cheap Iranian potatoes into Armenia exacerbates the situation, further affecting local farmers. Farmers report that importers bring in potatoes at 0.11 euros per kilogram, while the production cost of local potatoes is 0.26 –0.28 euros.

This has prompted discussions between various governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Economy and the governor's office, to find a solution.

According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, the gross potato harvest in 2023 amounted to 364,500 tons, a 3.7% increase compared to the previous year. However, data from the Customs Service shows a nearly twofold decrease in potato exports, while imports surged by 69% in the first half of the previous year, reaching 5,800 tons.
