Support for citrus producers in Nicosia, Turkey

The Mayor of Nicosia Turkish Municipality, Mehmet Harmanci, has announced plans to assist citrus producers through temporary acquisitions until export channels are established. In a statement on social media, Harmanci highlighted the absence of globally recognized testing in Turkey as a significant oversight.

"It is inconceivable that citrus and citrus producers have come to this point. The fact that a test that can be measured in an independent laboratory in Turkey, which can be accepted by the world, has not been carried out until today is a very serious executive weakness," he stated.

Furthermore, Harmanci emphasized the potential for non-EU countries to purchase citrus fruits and reassured that the LTB is poised to support producers during this interim period. "As the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia, we are ready to support our producers with temporary purchases until this export process opens the way. I am sure other municipalities are also ready to contribute to this. We should lose our producers and our production," he affirmed.
