From 2017 to the previous year, Malaysia exported approximately 234,000 tons of durian, valued at RM5.17 billion, as reported by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. The minister highlighted that Malaysian durian has penetrated 41 international markets, with exports encompassing fresh, frozen whole fruit, pulp, and paste forms. China emerged as the primary recipient, accounting for 73% of the total durian exports, translating to RM3.79 billion for 81,000 metric tons. Following China, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States, and Australia were significant markets.
Efforts to expand and solidify market presence are ongoing, with negotiations underway to introduce fresh whole durians to China, facilitated by discussions with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). The ministry and its agencies have increased promotional activities, with 30 programs conducted abroad last year, up from 25 in 2022, aiming to bolster durian exports further.
