Malaysian durian industry on track to expand its global market footprint

The Malaysian durian sector is on track to significantly expand its global market footprint, with projections indicating a rise to RM238.4 billion by 2033 from the RM118.93 billion recorded in 2023. This was highlighted by Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, during the Durian Manufacturer Association's first-anniversary celebration.

The industry's compound annual growth rate is pegged at 7.2% from 2023 to 2033, underscoring the sector's burgeoning potential. In 2022, Malaysia's durian production stood at 455,458 metric tons, with expectations to increase to 505,853 metric tons by 2025. Kurup emphasized the strategic focus on premium varieties such as "Musang King," which has positioned Malaysia favorably in the international market. The export value of Malaysian durians reached RM1.23 billion by the end of 2022, marking a 168% growth compared to 2019.

This growth is indicative of the escalating global demand for Malaysian durians and the country's strengthening position as a leading exporter. The government is set to introduce a protocol for the export of fresh durians this year, aiming to further capitalize on this lucrative opportunity.
