Georgian GCCPA releases blueberry market monitoring update

The Competition and Consumer Agency of Georgia (GCCPA) has released an interim report on its ongoing blueberry market monitoring, initiated on June 30, 2023. The focus of this surveillance encompasses the examination of competition dynamics within Georgia's blueberry sector, identifying key market determinants, barriers, and the competitive landscape. Throughout the 2020-2023 period, approximately 50 entities have been involved in exporting blueberries, predominantly to the Russian Federation, which accounts for over 90% of the total export volume.

The assessment reveals a shift in the market's concentration index from low in 2020-2022 to moderate in 2023, indicating changes in the competitive environment. Export volumes have shown a significant increase, with a total of 654.9 tons in 2020 surging to 3412.8 tons in 2023, marking a 500% growth. Concurrently, the value of these exports escalated from 11.3 million GEL in 2020 to 53.9 million GEL in 2023, reflecting a 475% increase.

The market share held by the top five exporting companies fluctuated between 43% and 65% during the study period, without any single entity or collective group achieving dominance. The GCCPA's final report on the blueberry market is anticipated in 2024, as the agency continues its comprehensive market analysis.
