"The demand cannot absorb the supply, so a significant stock of lemons is left on the tree"

The lemon market remains under pressure at origin due to the increase
in the harvest of Fino (or Primofiori) lemons. This confirms Ailimpo's campaign forecast.

"The market demand is unable to absorb the harvest, so there is still a significant amount of lemons on the trees," say representatives from the Interprofessional Association of Lemon and Grapefruit, Ailimpo.

Moreover, according to a producer and exporter, the higher number of fruits per tree and the alarming lack of rainfall have resulted in a predominance of small calibers, below size 58, which are not as appreciated in the market. "The arrival of commercial sizes has been significantly delayed," he says.

According to the interprofessional association, from September 1 to December 31, lemon exports have reached a total of 203,000 tons, compared to the 199,000 tons recorded in the same period of the previous campaign. "This 2% growth of exports contrasts slightly with the 30% increase in the harvest," they say.

Meanwhile, the industry had processed 74,000 tons by December 31, up from the 32,000 tons of the previous campaign; a result of the greater availability of discarded fruit, mainly fruit affected by pest damages. As of January 1, it is estimated that 642,000 tons of
Fino lemons remain to be harvested, according to Ailimpo.
